      Crossing over to a New Year 年越し(Toshikoshi)  Toshikoshi meant special preparations for the approaching New Year. These customs are very important for Japanese people. Before do that, we ahd big year-end clean up. It is called susu-harai which means sweep off shoot(Dec.13). At the end of the year, people do a through cleaning at home in order to welcome the god of the Year. Today most people start their house cleaning around December 27. After that, we decorate New Year holidays Shimenawa: A decoration put over the door of a house during the New Year period to keep the evil out. Kadomatsu: A pair of decorations put at both sides of the gates or entrances of houses in order to summon the year god. Pine is used as a symbol of longevity. Kagamimochi: A set of two rice cakes, one large and one small, stacked one on top of the other as an offeing to the gods.
